Ethiopia’s endemic and endangered Ethiopian Wolf. Less than 450 of these canids survive in the wild, in just a handful of isolated locations in the Ethiopian Highlands. This individual was photographed in the Bale Mountains – the species’ stronghold – yet even here just 200 remain, as they’re threatened by habitat loss (due to expansion of agriculture and grazing) and diseases from domestic dogs. An endangered spotted-tail (or tiger) quoll scampers along a log at the Conservation Ecology Centre in The Otways, Victoria, Australia. Tiger quolls are the largest carnivorous marsupial on the Australian mainland – and reportedly have the second strongest bite of any predatory mammal in the world (after the Tassie Devil). They are under threat from habitat destruction due to land-clearing, logging and bushfires. There are estimated to only be around 14,000 left in the wild. Copyright Tom Broadhurst.

Orangutan mother swings through its treetop home in Bukit Lawang, Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia. There are thought to be only 13,800 Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) left in the wild – their future under threat from habitat loss, poaching, the illegal pet trade, and climate change.
